What are Clear Aligners?

Historically, dentists had limited options to present their patients who wanted to correct the cosmetic appearance of their teeth without performing restorative dentistry with crowns or veneers. Because of this, they would often recommend an orthodontist who offers traditional braces. The good news for modern dentists is they now have several cosmetic solutions to offer — and practices that partner with Smart Designs can gain an edge over the competition because we use the latest in CAD-CAM manufacturing, scanning, and 3D printing to fabricate our Straight28™ orthodontic aligners.

How do Clear Aligners Work?

Clear aligners look similar to whitening trays and they are made from clear, medical-grade plastic. They fit perfectly over the teeth and are nearly invisible, especially when compared to traditional braces. While braces apply force to gradually shift teeth into place, aligners by slowly pushing teeth into the ideal position using a series of plastic aligners created based on the initial impressions or intraoral scans.

Benefits of Clear Aligners

The biggest advantage clear aligners have over traditional braces is its cosmetic appearance. Aside from that, clear aligners offer other benefits, most notably is the ability the remove for eating and cleaning. Brushing with traditional braces can be difficult, but because clear aligners can be removed, cleaning becomes much easier.

Benefits of 3D Printing

Dental laboratory technology has changed incredibly over the last decade.  Nowadays it’s seldom you see a technician waxing and casting a crown in our lab, we much more often will be found behind a monitor using CAD/CAM software to design a restoration.

We can take your impression or intraoral scan, import in to 3Shape, exoCAD, or another platform, then design a crown ready for milling, design our Straight28 aligners that rival any of the more popular brands, or use a CT scan to design a surgical guide for implant placement.  Regardless of the restoration we intend to fabricate, we very seldom use stone for our model work as well. We rely on our ability to use one of our many 3D printers to fabricate models used for a restoration and in some cases the final prosthesis.

Dental practices who are taking advantage of the technology we offer such as 3D printing are not only seeing an improvement in revenue but also greater patient satisfaction as well. With this technology, dentists are able to offer an incredibly fast transition from initial consultation to seating the final appliance or restoration.

Before intraoral scanning and 3D printing, dental practices counted on their laboratory to take their impressions and fabricate stone models to help fabricate crowns, bridges, clear aligners and other restorations for their patients. This process was not very efficient and not nearly as precise as 3D printing and intraoral scanning technology. With an intraoral scanner, dentists are able to precisely record the dimensions of the teeth they are working on or they can scan the entire mouth to take a virtual impression creating an accurate model for better fitting appliances or restorations.  The end result is better fitting and longer lasting restorations.
